The Ross Barnett Reservoir is Mississippi’s largest surface water impoundment (33,000 acres) and serves as the primary drinking water supply for the City of Jackson.  The Pearl River Valley Water Supply District manages the reservoir, which is surrounded by approximately 50 residential subdivisions with more than 4 thousand homes. The reservoir provides recreational opportunities with five campgrounds, 16 parks, 22 boat landings, three handicapped-accessible trails, and two multi-purpose trails.

Problem

Sediment has become an increasing problem in the reservoir because of the clogging of navigational channels.  Litter, trash, and other debris are another issue impacting storm drains that flow into the water from neighborhoods and waterways.

Solution

Local public governments are essential in planning for urban growth and are looking for ways to control and direct development, and create better methods of solving environmental problems.

Community Involvement

Citizens that live in the reservoir’s watershed should be responsible stewards.  Everyone has to do their part.  Good water quality will provide recreation and wildlife benefits.
